Then & Now: From Great Lakes Surfing to Kids Beach Camps

We’re digging into the archives to revisit the early days of Third Coast with this 2009 appearance on The Today Show (NBC). Mike Leonard visited our original surf shop in New Buffalo and met up with local surfers at New Buffalo City Beach for some cold-water waves.

Back then, freshwater surfing was still a bit of a novelty. Most people didn’t associate surfing with the Midwest, let alone Lake Michigan. But those who spent time on the water knew better. With the right conditions, the lake offers adventure that rivals coastal experiences — just with a uniquely local feel.

It’s important to note that the video takes place in early spring, when surfers wear wetsuits to brave chilly, stormy weather and bigger waves. If you’ve experienced the changing seasons on Lake Michigan, you probably know that by the time summer rolls around, the lake is mellow, warm, and perfect for learning to surf smaller waves at beach camp!

If you’ve been with us since those early days, this one’s for you. And if you’re new, consider this a little glimpse into where our beach camps began.
