From Surf Shop to Summer Memories: Why We Focused on Camps

Our journey began in 2005 with Third Coast Surf Shop, serving the growing Great Lakes surfing community through retail stores, lessons, rentals, and camps. In those early years, the shop was the hub — boards on the walls, gear lined up, and a steady flow of people excited about getting on the water.

But over time, we realized the moments that mattered most weren’t just happening inside the shop — they were happening outside, on the beach and in the water. In those shared experiences that turn into lasting memories.

As the business grew (and as our own two active, water-loving boys grew), we made a conscious decision to focus less on selling gear and more on creating those moments. Today, our camps are at the heart of what we do — days spent outside, off screens, and on the water. It’s about helping kids feel comfortable and confident, creating a space where they feel supported, and giving them the freedom to explore, try something new, and be part of something special.

At the same time, we’ve created more ways for families to get on the water through Third Coast Paddling. With eight waterfront locations offering kayak and paddleboard rentals, it’s a chance to slow down, explore, and experience the same connection to the water in your own way. A different pace, but rooted in the same idea.

We’re grateful to be part of so many families’ summers and to share what we love about the water. If you’re looking for something a little different this season, we’d love to have you join us — whether it’s for camp or a day on the water together.
